[ There are some things that being away from home won't replace. The royalty of Irestill would behave as they always did, with grace and poise even if they had no kingdom to rule. Similarly, afternoon tea was a ritual that would still be undertaken no matter where they would be - if the situation permit it. Which meant that Naoise had a duty to fulfil of making tea.
The current situation of smooth sailing on the Grandcypher did permit Naoise to brew a pot of tea for the royal siblings. Well, sibling in the singular. Boiling the water, steeping the tea - each step became meditative as his hands moved without him giving much thought to what he was doing. His thoughts turned to what Heles had said to him earlier in the day before she departed with the Captain on some sojourn or another, saying that she left Seruel in his charge - and to proceed with tea time without her. It would be good for Seruel to be able to talk freely with Naoise without her, to which Naoise looked confused as he believed there was no way that Seruel would keep anything from his sister. (She's not going to say it out right, but Naoise is a fool and she can see what Seruel sees in him but also, a fool nonetheless)
As the smell of tea wafted in the study that they had taken residence in, Naoise sets the table with two teacups, an assortment of cakes and the fresh pot of tea. Now to simply wait for his lordship to arrive. ]
[ Naoise is a fool... Seruel, despite his age, would still hide things from his older sister like his life depends on it. It's a habit from childhood that's hard to break, but it isn't all too kingdom destroying. Hopefully. Despite that, he quite enjoys Heles' company for the most part—when she isn't nagging ever so subtly. Her absence does not at all change his demeanor enough for a fool like Naoise to notice.
With an invitation, Seruel arrives five minutes before the planned time. Instead of being in armor, he's dressed down for the occasion. It's just a simple white shirt, a blue cardigan, and khakis. It feels like it's been a long time since Alster and the their Skadi escapade. The only thing they need to worry about is Scathacha eavesdropping for the time being.
He greets his friend with a soft smile, finding it surreal that Naoise is here, that his dreams aren't haunted by his father anymore, and that he isn't plagued with the worries of not being worthy to be king. It's tea time. ]
Good afternoon, Naoise. [ He takes his usual seat in the study, eyeing all of the goodies on their platters. ] What will we be having today? The aroma is heavenly.
[ He turns around to see that his lord had entered the study and he breathed a sigh of relief. While Seruel was not the type to miss an appointment, Naoise was sure he felt something swell in his chest ]
My lord.
[ In his arms, he had a tray with two tea cups and a tea pot. He gave Seruel a small bow before walking over to set the china down on the table. ]
This was a present from the shopkeep Sierokarte. I believe she said they were a delicacy from the island we were last sojourning to.
[ Well more like, they gave the crew an entire bakery's worth of food through Siero and there was no way that the Captain was going to eat it on his own despite what Lyria and Vryn said. So everyone in the crew was free to help themselves. It was eclairs and small cakes, perfect for tea time. But he takes the tea pot and holds it, proffered to Seruel. ]
Shall I pour the tea? Or would his lordship prefer to start with the pastries?
[ Polite and proper as usual. Seruel is used to this treatment from everyone, including his dear friend, but he heaves a sigh when Naoise circles over with his gifts. His friend will always be a good man—a fool, but always a good man. ]
It's only the two of us, so call me by my name.
[ His words are curt and poignant, but full of fondness nevertheless. It's Prince here, King there, Lord elsewhere, and the only person he hears his name by itself is from his sister or the captain themselves.
Or Scathacha. That great dragon needs not show him respect, despite being rather indignant. He motions with his hand over to Naoise, gesturing that he would like some of that fine tea from the famous merchant herself. ]
Pour me a cup if you will. I'll have a pastry after.
[ The name rolls off his tongue easily. Naoise was all too happy to oblige as he gives a slight bow before pouring the fragrant liquid into the other's cup. This was something that made his heart sing, that they could have peaceful moments like this together. Once he was sure that Seruel's cup was filled, he proceeded to pour his own before sitting down across from his lord.
Usually Heles would by the one to direct the mood of the conversation as it struck her, so it was profoundly different that it was just the two of them. However, it wasn't bad. Just new. Something different. ]
[ Heles did have a knack for driving the conversation, setting the mood—overall wise guidance from his dear older sister. The silence settles in the room after their small exchange, but Seruel doesn't find it uncomfortable. His expression softens as he takes a sip of his cup, then plucks a pastry for a test.
All great quality as usual... From time to time, he looks over to Naoise, wondering how he should breach the silence. He needs to choose his words with care, though he never felt he needed to watch what he says. Setting the cup back down onto its saucer, he shifts his gaze over to him. ]
You're looking well even though Scathacha latches onto you everyday armed with sharp words. [ He's teasing? Complimenting? Both? ] It's been a while since the two of us had time alone... It reminds me of the past.
[ Where they used to go on adventures into the woods behind their homes without Heles only to be wrangled back home by her all the same. Good times ]
